Mill Seat Landfill is owned by Monroe County and operated by Waste Management of New York, LLC. The facility provides environmentally responsible solid waste management to the region. Mill Seat’s modern operation is focused on sustainability through renewable energy production and wildlife habitat management. The landfill is a non-hazardous facility and maintains operating permits with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
The facility is located on the western edge of Monroe County in the Town of Riga. Mill Seat Landfill was permitted in 1991 and began operation in 1993. In 2002, Monroe County partnered with Waste Management to operate the site. Waste Management is proud to partner with the towns of Riga and Bergen, the villages of Churchville and Bergen, as well as Monroe County.
Each year the site opens its doors to neighbors for annual Scout Day and Open House events. The Mill Seat Renewable Energy Facility creates enough power for over 6,000 homes each year through an onsite facility that turns landfill gas into clean energy. Our team at Mill Seat Landfill works year-round to provide value to the community and improve the quality of life for all residents.
